about

The Stand were a modern 1990s power pop guitar band with a sound that displayed their penchant for catchy melodies and pop aggression. With a tip of the hat to the neo- punk movement, the Stand leaves many '90s bands behind with this strong release from beyond. Mixing styles championed by Elvis Costello, The B-52s and the Clash, this group hardly sounds like the rest of their contemporaries.

"In 3 Days" was recorded in 1991 and released in '92 as a 10- track album. The album has been unavailable for many years and is now back with three bonus tracks.

“The Rain” has a raw energy that is harnessed with an infectious chorus and edgy guitars that force your feet to inexplicably move in time with the music. The same can be said of “Round and Round” which creatively describes the hopeless search of the lost who run in circles “round and round/till we all found down”. And “Holding Back” with the cries of desire a '90s version of John's exclamations on the Isle of Patmos 1900 years ago. The subject of defining right and wrong in a culture that regards both as ambiguous is this theme of “Look At The Way” “Fallen Tear” and “Believe” and have a '90s college radio feel to them.

The music has a garage/grunge/rock sound with little overdub and polish. Sonically it captures the effect of what the band would sound like live. Think of '80s bands, the Godfathers, The Brandos and Bourgeoisie Tagg who shared the same affect.

The most progressive album cut is the promising “Free Love” with it thumping bass line and nonstop beat. It’s message is one of that every one could easily get behind. The Nick Lowe penned, Elvis Costello cover of “What’s So Funny “Bout Peace, Love And Understanding” is remade with zeal and optimism.

Although The Stand employees some punk-like stylings, they are surprisingly tight. Each instrument is tuned to the vocals without compromising the energy. Strong bass lines infect every song with a solid message and musicianship.

about

The Stand Los Angeles, California

The Stand formed in the 1980s and were a fixture on the LA bar circuit. The band were eager to release an album but the major labels were uninterested. As a result, lead singer Tony Valenziano created Smile Records, a label where The Stand and other power pop bands could call home. Their debut album was released in 2002.
They were often compared to Raspberries, The Rembrandts and Sugar
