about

The Stand was a modern Power Pop guitar band with a sound which displays their penchant for the catchy melodies of Raspberries and Sweet -era music, yet adds the pop aggression of bands such as Sugar and The Grays. Big guitars, big hooks and big grooves abound in this music, with the urban poetry of Tony Valenziano causing the listener to become involved with the characters within the songs. The four members of The Stand have been poppin' the L.A. club scene since the new resurgence of power pop in the late 1980s and had lead the way in helping expose this hook-laden music again.

These are the 1980s demos of the LA based power pop band that lead to their major label debut "Heartbreak Town". The 12-track set hasn't ever been released previously and is now available digitally after 30 years in the vaults.

The Stand thanks: the fun and original people who were involved with us from day one, The Fish family for letting us rehearse in their garage all those years, Tim Chandler for lending Gary the bass equipment till he could get his own, the girls who became wives and then maybe weren’t later but who’s influence at the time definitely were the inspiration for those songs, all the people at Liberation Hall, Arny Schorr, Antone DeSantis, Randy Perry, Mark Kalmus, and the peeps at Smile Records, family and friends who supported the project with encouragement and emotional things, Phil Seymour (still precious to me), Gino, Jackie, our better halves (now), bands who made us what we were, The Knack, The Plimsouls, Robin Lane & the Chartbusters, The Replacements, Beatles, Byrds, Wayne Johnson Trio, allot of the bands we played with along the way and saw but no one ever heard of except those there at the time, Madame Wong’s (East and West), Club 88, The Music Machine, Roxy, Gazzari’s, The Oasis, The Palomino, (Tommy Thomas who gave us our first break opening for The Venture’s), The Central (now The Viper Room) where they gave us every Wednesday night to play and work out our craft for months and eventually led to our getting signed, all the bands we have played with now and back in the day, what a great time the early 80’s were for us Power Poppers, and to the one above…thanks for letting stay around this long to be able to do this the second time around....

about

The Stand Los Angeles, California

The Stand formed in the 1980s and were a fixture on the LA bar circuit. The band were eager to release an album but the major labels were uninterested. As a result, lead singer Tony Valenziano created Smile Records, a label where The Stand and other power pop bands could call home. Their debut album was released in 2002.
They were often compared to Raspberries, The Rembrandts and Sugar
